The covid-19 pandemic has, in some ways, overshadowed the “other health pandemics” that, unfortunately, are also distressing and worrying us, being equally deadly.

One of these “other pandemics” is cancer, the one that concerns us at MiWEndo and that we fight against every day. Specifically, colorectal cancer, which is the most prevalent cancer in Spain.

In fact, the public authorities, as it cannot be otherwise, also worry about cancer, and a lot. For example, a few months ago, in September 2020, the European Commission published the document “Conquering Cancer: Mission possible”, where a European-wide plan is published to defeat this terrible disease.

As explained in the document, the European Commission’s mission is to save 3 million people from cancer by 2030. To do so, it has proposed five areas of work in which a great deal of public resources will be devoted in the coming years:

1. Prevention where possible.
2. Improve diagnostic tools.
3. Improve tools to support quality of life.
4. Better understand the disease.
5. Ensuring access to treatment for the entire population.

And, precisely, between the first and the second area, is where initiatives such as MiWEndo are located, which influence the improvement of current early diagnosis tools. In fact, in their fourth recommendation, European Commission experts talk about optimizing current screening programs and developing new approaches for screening and early diagnosis: just what we do at MiWEndo by developing our diagnostic system based on microwaves!
