In recent days, the Pope’s colon has made headlines. The Pope had to undergo surgery for diverticulitis in the colon, which is a much more prevalent disease than we think.
Diverticulitis occurs when small sacs or pouches adjacent to the colon, called diverticula, which some people develop, become inflamed. Diverticula are very common in the general population. It is estimated that almost 60% of the population over 60 years of age have diverticula, which explains why this type of inflammation is so common.
Precisely because this type of degeneration is so common, at MiWEndo we have to control them so that our colorectal cancer detection system is not confused by the presence of these bags. In addition, it is common that, in colonoscopies, food and fluid debris accumulate inside the diverticula that can confuse the reflection of our microwaves. Consequently, this is an “anomaly” that we at MiWEndo study closely.
