Today, 31st of March, is the World Colon Cancer Day, or colorectal cancer, as we like to say in MiWEndo.

The aim of the day is none other than to make the population aware of the need to adopt healthy habits for the prevention of this terrible disease, as well as the importance of its early diagnosis.

Precisely at this second point is where MiWEndo is immersed with body and soul in, and, taking advantage of the anniversary we wanted, today, to open a blog specialized in this matter. The intention of the blog is to update on the news and advances of the company, as well as other relevant facts that happen in the fight against colorectal cancer, both in diagnosis and therapy.

As you may already know, MiWEndo is a start-up of four academic institutions in Barcelona: the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and ICREA, and we are developing a radar to identify precancerous polyps of the colon and rectum with a precision never seen before. This technology is designed to complement colonoscopic scans, that currently are the standard method for the diagnosis of this cancer.

In fact, unfortunately, colonoscopies, although are the most reliable method currently available, they do not detect 22% of these polyps that eventually become tumours. That is why, for example, in our country, colorectal cancer is the most prevalent cancer, with more than 44,000 new cases each year (94 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and a lethality of 50%. Overall, globally, the numbers are even more chilling, with 1.8 million new cases each year and the number continuing to rise. Precisely, these bad data are what encourage us, every day, to the great team of engineers, doctors, and biotechnologists of MiWEndo to progress in this battle without quarter. ¡We continue to report!
